It is with great pleasure that I am writing the foreword to this millenium publication by the community in Crocketford.

The Millenium is a very significant event in our history and it is only right that it should be commemorated, not just at a national level, but also by every town and village in their own way. By definition very few people get the chance to celebrate a millenium and it is important that those celebrations are not simply a one off transient event which happens and then disappears forever, but that we use the occasion to create something permanent which will be of some value and interest to future generations.

Every community in Scotland has its own facinating individual story, not necessarily dealing with the great events of world history, but with events which none the less have been significant in shaping the community, and it is very appropriate that Crocketford's millenium should be celebrated by recording some of those events. In this booklet is traced some of the history of Crocketford and the surrounding area, with descriptions of some of the people and significant events that have shaped the village as it is now. It is right that, as we mark the end of 2000 years of Christian civilisation, we do pause to look back and see what has made us what we are today.

But this publication is not just a volume for those who are here today, it is hopefully a book which will be looked at and studied by future generations eager to discover what kind of people lived in Crocketford at the end of the second millenium.

So I hope that you enjoy this book and I hope that you ensure that your home always keeps a copy of it, so that those who live in your house in the future, whether it is from your own family or another, can look back in the years to come and remember Crocketford's millenium.
